Job description

Role overview

This position is an Operational Support Grade role at HMP Bullingdon within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The post is designed for someone who is practical, reliable, and comfortable working in a busy, safety-focused environment. You will support the everyday functioning of the prison as part of a team, handling a mix of operational, visitor-facing, security, and administrative duties.

What the job involves

The work is varied and active. Duties can include security checks and searches at the gate, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring phone activity and CCTV, and carrying out tasks that involve walking across the prison site, lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles. The role combines desk-based responsibilities with more physical work.

Working pattern and location considerations

This is a shift-based role, and you should expect to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and night shifts as part of the rota. Because some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not always mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive on time for every shift.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed for this position. It is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well with others. The role can be a strong entry point into a prison services career.

Career development and impact

Working as an OSG gives you insight into how a prison operates and offers experience that may help you progress into other prison roles. There may also be opportunities to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme. The job contributes to public protection by supporting the work carried out every day inside the prison.

Pay and benefits

The base salary for the role is £29,432. In addition to pay, you can expect structured training and development opportunities, progression prospects, 25 days of annual leave on joining (rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, pro-rated), 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
