Job description
Role overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting an Operational Support Grade for HMP Bullingdon. This is a hands-on, fast-moving role focused on helping the prison operate safely and efficiently each day. The position offers a salary of £29,432.
What you’ll do
You will support a busy prison environment by carrying out a mix of security, front-of-house, monitoring and practical tasks. The job includes duties such as checking security at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. Some tasks are office-based, while others are more physical, including lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Travel and attendance
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though this is not always required unless specifically stated for the role. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work on time for every shift and should think carefully about the location before applying.
Licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full and valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, allowing the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays calm in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. Because the work moves quickly, it can be a strong starting point for someone looking to build a career in the prison service.
Working pattern
You will be expected to work different shift patterns, including nights and weekends, so the prison can remain operational around the clock.
Career development
This role gives you a close look at how a prison functions and can lead to wider opportunities within the prison service. It may also provide a route to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and development support, along with opportunities to progress. Alongside base pay, the package includes paid annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits and a range of staff support and savings schemes.
Additional terms and benefits
- Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
- You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
- There is access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Staff can use the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
