Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Swaleside. This is a demanding, fast-moving role where you will help protect the public while supporting people in custody to make positive changes in their lives.

The position offers a salary range of £37,246 to £41,503 and suits someone with the right blend of integrity, resilience and character to handle challenging situations responsibly.

Who this role suits

There is no single background that defines a prison officer. People from many different professions and life experiences can succeed in this work, including parents, teachers, retail workers and former armed forces personnel. What matters most is that you bring empathy, confidence and strong communication skills.

You will be expected to build respectful, constructive and professional working relationships with people in custody, including those who may be going through a very difficult period in their lives. A collaborative mindset is essential, as safety depends on staff working closely together as one team.

What the job involves

Every day can look different. In the same shift, you may move between keeping order, supporting individuals through difficult moments, and helping to guide or educate them. The role is hands-on and directly involved with prisoners in a secure environment.

You must be prepared to work rotating shifts and weekends.

Training, growth and benefits

Successful candidates will receive thorough training along with opportunities to progress and develop, including the chance to specialise in different areas over time.

In addition to the salary, the package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, access to an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Beyond the formal benefits, the role offers the reward of helping people turn their lives around, which many find deeply meaningful.

How to apply

Applicants who feel they match the qualities required for the role are encouraged to submit an application.
