Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Long Lartin in Murcot, England. This is a demanding, people-focused role where you’ll help protect the public while supporting prisoners to make constructive changes in their lives.

Pay for this position is £33,746 to £38,003.

The job is fast-moving and varied, with no two days being alike. As you build experience, you may also have opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas.

Who this role suits

There is no single background for a prison officer. HMPPS welcomes applicants from many different walks of life, including people with experience as parents, teachers, retail workers, or members of the armed forces. What matters most is that you can bring empathy, self-belief, strong communication, integrity, and resilience.

You should be comfortable building professional, constructive relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives.

Teamwork is essential in this environment, and you must be prepared to work closely with colleagues to keep the prison, prisoners, and staff safe.

What the role involves

In a single shift, you may need to move between very different responsibilities. At one moment you may be maintaining order and safety, and at another you may be supporting, guiding, or teaching prisoners. Your work will directly contribute to public protection and rehabilitation.

Working pattern

You will need to be available for different shift patterns, including weekends.

Training, growth, and rewards

You’ll receive strong training and development support, along with opportunities to progress and specialise over time.

Alongside a competitive salary, the benefits package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and the Cycle to Work scheme.

Beyond the tangible benefits, the role offers a strong sense of purpose and the chance to help people turn their lives around.

How to apply

If you feel you have the qualities needed for the role, you are encouraged to apply.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
