Overview

The Youth Detention Policy and Practice team plays a crucial role in supporting the delivery of best practice youth detention services across Queensland. This team focuses on developing and guiding operational policies, providing practice support, leading improvement initiatives, and managing statutory reporting related to youth detention centres and secure custody environments for young people.

• Developing comprehensive operational policies and procedures that shape the delivery and practices of youth detention services.
• Offering practice guidance and support to staff, stakeholders, and associated services working with youth detention centres.
• Leading significant projects aimed at enhancing youth detention practices.
• Responding to oversight mechanisms and executing recommendations effectively.
• Administering various statutory reporting requirements to ensure compliance and transparency.

Principal Practice Officer Role Specifics

• Exemplify cultural capability, with a focus on fostering an inclusive environment that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019, while supporting programs that maintain cultural ties for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
• Investigate, analyze, and address complex operational and practice challenges; develop and implement evidence-based policies and practical solutions.
• Prepare detailed high-level advice regarding current practices, relevant policies, legislation, and programs. Draft a variety of official documents such as cabinet submissions, executive correspondences, briefings, and information papers concerning youth detention service delivery.
• Lead and oversee major projects within prescribed timelines ensuring desired objectives are met.
• Engage with departmental teams and stakeholders to identify practice concerns and collaboratively develop strategic and operational remedies.
• Represent the department in internal and external forums, negotiating on practice initiatives and youth detention projects to improve and innovate service delivery.
• Provide expert advice about youth justice service delivery trends and challenges to management and stakeholders. This includes insights on evidence-based practices and legislative interpretations.
• Operate effectively within a team setting and, when delegated, coordinate team activities while fostering a fair and accountable workplace culture.
