Role overview
Queensland Government is seeking a Principal Consultant in Employee Relations based in Brisbane. This position focuses on supporting the business with a broad range of industrial and employment matters, with particular attention to employee relations case management, advisory work, investigations, conflict resolution, and compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
Key duties
- Offer guidance and practical support to the business on industrial and employment-related issues.
- Handle a varied portfolio of matters including performance, conduct, grievances, complaints, attendance concerns, and independent medical examination cases.
- Investigate employee complaints directly and/or coordinate external investigators, prepare briefing notes, compile relevant documentation, and arrange meetings between investigators and employees.
- Assist managers in creating performance improvement plans and absence management strategies.
- Manage employee relations matters in line with applicable legislation, industrial instruments, directives, policies, and procedures.
- Support early intervention and resolution of workplace disputes through mediation, coaching, and structured conversations.
- Draft file notes, briefing papers, correspondence, and other documents connected to employee relations work.
- Prepare public interest disclosure assessments and human rights assessments, including recommendations.
- Ensure records and case documentation are maintained accurately, promptly, and with strict confidentiality.
About you
The ideal candidate brings experience advising on and managing human resources or employee relations issues, along with a solid understanding of public sector legislation and industrial instruments. You should also be capable of producing clear reports, communicating with precision and confidence, presenting persuasive reasoning, and negotiating effectively.
