Role Overview and Impact

We are seeking experienced background investigators based in California to conduct background checks for public safety, security, and sworn personnel roles.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform remote candidate interviews via video or phone as needed.
• Carry out reference interviews remotely.
• Complete verifications including employment and education as assigned.
• Review various records and clearly document findings objectively.
• Conduct social media and open-source research within legal compliance.
• Prepare thorough, timely investigative summaries and reports in accordance with POST standards and program guidelines.
• Collaborate with internal project management and quality assurance teams to finalize reports.
• Ensure secure management of sensitive data and adherence to documentation protocols.

What You'll Investigate

• Pre-employment checks for sworn personnel following POST compliance.
• Background assessments for public safety dispatchers.
• Investigations related to security management and supervisory positions.
• Fast-track cases for security officers.
• Follow-up or investigative work addressing disqualifying or unexpected findings.

Compensation and Work Structure

• This is a 1099 independent contractor role paid per completed investigation or task; hourly payments only if specifically pre-approved.
• POST-compliant investigations offer up to $645 per case.
• Contractors set their own schedules within case deadlines and may accept or decline assignments based on availability.
• Opportunity to work with multiple clients.

Candidate Requirements

• Must hold POST Background Investigator certification to handle sworn personnel cases.
• A minimum of five years of experience conducting pre-employment investigations for law enforcement or public safety entities.
• Strong familiarity with POST standards and California Government Codes 1031 and 1029.
• Exceptional written communication skills with disciplined documentation practices.
• Ability to work independently, juggle multiple cases, and meet deadlines.
• Comfort with remote, case-driven work environments.
• Strong attention to detail ensuring consistent and defensible reports.
