Role Overview
This opportunity is for an experienced California-based field background investigator who will support pre-employment screening for public safety, security, and sworn personnel. The work is project-based and assigned according to availability, prior experience, and case demand. It is a 1099 independent contractor engagement, with the freedom to accept or decline assignments and set a schedule around case deadlines.
Types of Cases You May Handle
- POST-compliant investigations for sworn personnel
- Background work for public safety dispatchers
- Cases for security management and supervisory positions
- Fast-track screening for security officers
- Follow-up research related to disqualifying or unexpected findings
Key Duties

- Review applicable records and clearly document the findings
- Carry out social media and open-source research in line with legal requirements
- Prepare prompt, accurate field notes and supporting documentation that meet POST expectations
- Work with internal project managers and quality reviewers to help complete and submit final reports
Compensation
This is a per-case engagement rather than an hourly role, unless a specific task has been approved in advance for hourly payment. POST-compliant investigations can pay up to $645 per case. In some situations, the investigation may be split between a field investigator and a report writer, with compensation divided according to scope.
Benefits
