Job description

About the company

sunday is creating a faster, easier way for restaurant guests to pay. By scanning a QR code, diners can settle the bill, add a tip, and be done in roughly 10 seconds. The company focuses on intuitive products, operational simplicity, and building trust with both restaurants and guests. Its platform is used by thousands of restaurants across the US, UK, and France, helping operators improve table turnover, lift tips, and gain better business insight.

Role overview

The US business is growing quickly, with more than 70 employees across 7 states, and this opening is for the first US People Partner. Rather than stepping into a pre-built system, you will define the approach, create the playbook, and establish the people infrastructure that supports scale. The role suits someone who likes solving problems, automating repetitive work, and acting as a trusted partner to managers and employees while strengthening the broader people function.

You will own the core people operations work, including payroll, compliance, and benefits, and use that efficiency to contribute to higher-value work such as manager partnership, culture, performance, and organizational growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Build US people operations processes from the ground up and introduce automation or AI-enabled tools wherever they can reduce manual effort.
  • Take ownership of HRIS setup and ongoing optimization in HiBob or a similar platform, including workflows, reporting, and dashboards for leadership visibility.
  • Create well-documented and scalable processes for onboarding, offboarding, compliance, and the employee lifecycle.
  • Act as a dependable advisor to US managers on performance, employee relations, compensation, and organizational design.
  • Turn uncertain or incomplete situations into practical recommendations and keep work moving without waiting for perfect clarity.
  • Support performance reviews, employee engagement initiatives, and culture-building programs.
  • Manage US payroll end to end across 7 or more states, including deductions, tax filings, reconciliations, and accuracy controls.
  • Administer benefits programs such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) while ensuring a smooth employee experience.
  • Maintain multi-state HR compliance by spotting risks early and aligning practices with federal and state requirements.
  • Coordinate with external partners including benefits brokers, legal advisors, PEO providers, and compliance specialists.
  • Assess and roll out new tools and systems as the business evolves.

Candidate profile

This role is best suited to someone with 5+ years of experience in HR business partnering, people operations, or HR generalist work within a fast-growing startup or scaleup, ideally with exposure to multiple states or countries. The person should already be comfortable running US payroll, understand the detail required for error-free processing, and have strong knowledge of US employment law and multi-state compliance.

The ideal candidate naturally looks for automation before adding manual work, is analytical and detail-oriented, can spot discrepancies early, and creates reporting that is genuinely useful. They should be comfortable working without a fixed playbook, able to make solid decisions in ambiguity, and capable of explaining HR and legal topics clearly to non-HR stakeholders. A founder-like mindset toward building and owning the function is important.

Compensation and benefits

  • Base salary of $100,000 to $125,000 plus stock options.
  • Health coverage for medical, dental, and vision for the employee and dependents.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Flexible unlimited paid time off.
  • Hybrid arrangement with three days per week in the office in Atlanta, Chicago, or New York City.
  • High autonomy and a wide scope of responsibility from the start.
  • The chance to build the US people function from scratch at a rapidly scaling company.

Hiring process

  • Submit an application with a resume.
  • Initial phone screen.
  • Interview with the hiring manager.
  • Live case study with future teammates.
  • Conversation with the wider team.
  • Offer stage.
  • Reference checks with the three most recent managers.
