Job description

About Sunday

Sunday is creating a faster and more intuitive way for restaurant guests to pay. By scanning a QR code, diners can settle the bill, add a tip, and leave in roughly 10 seconds. The company is focused on keeping the experience simple, trustworthy, and effective for both restaurants and guests. Its platform is already used in thousands of restaurants across the US, UK, and France, helping operators turn tables faster, improve tips, and access useful insights.

The business is growing quickly in the US, and the team is built around ownership, speed, and ambition.

About the Role

Sunday is at a key growth stage in the US, with more than 70 employees across 7 states. The company is looking for its first US People Partner to help build a People function that supports growth and contributes directly to the business.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys starting from a blank slate, automating wherever possible, and acting as a dependable partner to both managers and employees. The role combines hands-on ownership of core HR operations with the opportunity to shape culture, improve processes, and build scalable systems for the future.

You will be responsible for the essential People Ops work, including payroll, compliance, and benefits, while also using the time saved through efficiency to focus on leadership support, organizational development, and broader people strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and automate US People Operations from scratch, using AI and smart tools to reduce manual effort and prevent process debt.
  • Own configuration and ongoing improvement of the HRIS, such as HiBob or a similar platform, including workflows, dashboards, and reporting for leadership visibility.
  • Create clear, scalable documentation and processes for onboarding, offboarding, compliance, and the full employee lifecycle.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to US managers on performance, employee relations, compensation, and organization structure.
  • Turn unclear situations into practical recommendations and keep work moving even when all information is not yet available.
  • Support performance review cycles, employee engagement efforts, and culture initiatives that help people stay and grow with the company.
  • Manage US payroll end to end across 7+ states, including deductions, tax filings, and reconciliations, with a strong focus on accuracy.
  • Administer employee benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k), ensuring a smooth experience for employees.
  • Maintain multi-state HR compliance by identifying risks early and aligning processes with federal and state regulations.
  • Handle relationships with benefits brokers, legal counsel, PEO providers, and compliance advisors.
  • Assess and roll out new tools and platforms as business needs change.

What We Are Looking For

  • At least 5 years of experience in an HR Business Partner, People Operations, or HR Generalist role, ideally in a fast-growing startup or scaleup with multi-state or international exposure.
  • Proven experience running US payroll from start to finish, with a strong understanding of what it takes to keep it error-free.
  • Solid knowledge of US employment law and multi-state compliance requirements.
  • A strong bias toward automation and AI-first thinking before adding more manual work or headcount.
  • Analytical mindset with a careful, detail-oriented approach to metrics, reporting, and discrepancy detection.
  • Comfort working without a predefined playbook and making good decisions in uncertain situations.
  • Clear communicator who can explain complex HR and legal matters in simple terms for non-HR stakeholders.
  • Founder-like ownership of the function and a proactive approach to building solutions.

Benefits and Perks

  • Base salary of $100,000 to $125,000 plus stock options.
  • Full health coverage for employees and their dependents, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Flexible unlimited PTO policy.
  • Hybrid working model with 3 days per week in the office in Atlanta, Chicago, or New York City.
  • High autonomy and broad responsibility from the first day.
  • Opportunity to build the US People function from the ground up at a fast-moving company.

Recruitment Process

  • Application with resume submission.
  • Initial phone screening.
  • Interview with the hiring manager.
  • Live case study with future teammates.
  • Conversation with the wider team to assess culture fit.
  • Offer stage.
  • Reference checks with the three most recent managers.

All qualified applicants are considered for employment regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, marital status, veteran status, genetic information, or any other status protected by law.
