Job description
About Sunday
Sunday is creating a faster and simpler way for restaurant guests to pay. By scanning a QR code, diners can settle the bill, add a tip, and finish the process in roughly 10 seconds. The company focuses on making the product feel intuitive and trustworthy for both restaurants and guests, while helping operators turn tables more quickly, grow tips, and gain useful business insights. Sunday operates across restaurants in the US, UK, and France and is scaling rapidly in the US market.
About the Role
Sunday is at a key growth stage in the US, with more than 70 employees across 7 states. The business is looking for its first US People Partner to shape the People function from the ground up. This is a build-first role for someone who enjoys creating structure in an environment with little existing playbook, automating wherever possible, and acting as a trusted advisor to managers and employees.
The role combines hands-on operational ownership with strategic partnership. You will manage payroll, compliance, and benefits with accuracy, while also helping define culture, support leaders, and build people processes that can scale alongside the business.
What You Will Do
- Design and automate US people operations processes from scratch, using technology and AI to reduce manual work before it becomes unnecessary overhead.
- Take ownership of HRIS setup and optimization, including workflow design, dashboards, and reporting that provide leaders with timely visibility.
- Create clear, repeatable documentation for onboarding, offboarding, compliance, and the complete employee lifecycle.
- Act as a practical advisor for US managers on performance management, employee relations, compensation, and organizational design.
- Turn ambiguous people issues into actionable recommendations and keep work moving even when information is incomplete.
- Support performance reviews, employee engagement efforts, and initiatives that strengthen culture and retention.
- Manage US payroll across more than 7 states, including deductions, filings, reconciliations, and error-free execution.
- Administer benefits programs such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k), ensuring employees have a smooth experience.
- Maintain compliance across multiple states by identifying risks early and aligning practices with federal and state requirements.
- Coordinate with external partners such as benefits brokers, legal advisors, PEO providers, and compliance specialists.
- Assess and roll out tools and platforms as the company’s needs change.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in an HR Business Partner, People Operations, or HR Generalist role at a fast-growing startup or scaleup, preferably with multi-state or international exposure.
- Direct experience managing US payroll end to end, with a clear understanding of what is required to achieve error-free processing.
- Strong knowledge of US employment law and multi-state compliance requirements.
- A strong preference for automation and AI-driven solutions before adding people or relying on manual processes.
- Comfort with data, metrics, and reporting, including spotting issues early and creating useful dashboards or reports.
- Ability to work effectively without a detailed playbook and make sound decisions in uncertainty.
- Excellent communication skills, especially for explaining complex HR and legal topics to non-HR stakeholders.
- A founder-like mindset with ownership, speed, and accountability for the function you lead.
What Sunday Offers
- Base salary of $100,000 to $125,000, plus stock options.
- Health coverage for you and your dependents, including medical, dental, and vision.
- 401(k) retirement plan.
- Flexible unlimited PTO.
- Hybrid working arrangement with 3 days per week in the office in Atlanta, Chicago, or New York City.
- Significant autonomy and broad responsibility from the first day.
- The chance to build the US People function from the ground up at a company that is growing quickly.
Recruitment Process
- Submit an application with your resume.
- Initial phone screen.
- Conversation with the hiring manager.
- Live case study with future teammates.
- Meeting with the wider team to assess culture fit.
- Offer stage.
- Reference checks with your three most recent managers.
