Job description

Overview

Canopie is a digital maternal health organization that supports pregnant and postpartum people with structured, evidence-informed guidance, education, and care navigation. The team delivers fully virtual coaching, classes, and clinical resources throughout the perinatal journey.

The company is focused on creating a more inclusive and responsive care model that values lived experience in addition to clinical knowledge.

Why this role is important

Pregnancy and postpartum decisions are deeply personal, and people often benefit from support that understands the realities of this stage of life. Maternal Health Peer Specialists help fill that need by offering compassionate, experience-based support that helps members feel understood, supported, and confident in making choices that fit their values and circumstances.

This is a peer-support position, not a directive one. The goal is to listen, share perspective when it is helpful, and support members in finding what works best for them.

What you will do

  • Deliver virtual peer support to members during pregnancy and after birth, drawing on personal lived experience.
  • Provide empathy, reassurance, and validation during key transitions in the perinatal period.
  • Share personal insight when appropriate to help normalize experiences and reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Reach out to members and engage them through structured workflows and communication tools.
  • Help members work through common concerns such as emotional wellbeing, identity changes, recovery, feeding, sleep, and returning to work.
  • Guide members toward Canopie resources such as coaching, classes, and clinical care when their needs call for additional support.
  • Identify situations that require clinical or other escalation and follow the established pathway.
  • Record member interactions accurately and consistently in Canopie’s platform.
  • Communicate with members by phone, video, and secure messaging.
  • Take part in training, supervision, and peer development activities.

Scope and boundaries

  • This position is strictly non-clinical and does not involve medical treatment or mental health treatment.
  • Peer Specialists are not responsible for diagnosing conditions or making care decisions.
  • The emphasis is on support, connection, and helping members access the right resources.
  • Clear escalation routes are provided for clinical concerns or higher-risk situations.

Requirements

To do well in this role, candidates should have recent lived experience with pregnancy and/or the postpartum period within the last 3–5 years. They should be able to use their own experience thoughtfully and appropriately to support others.

  • Some background in maternal health, peer support, community-based work, or caregiving.
  • Comfort providing support in a virtual, digital setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a warm, respectful, non-judgmental style.
  • Ability to work within structured workflows while still connecting authentically.
  • Strong comfort with digital tools such as video platforms, messaging systems, and documentation software.
  • Dependable, organized, and responsive while working remotely.
  • Preferred: prior peer support experience, formal or informal.
  • Preferred: exposure to perinatal mental health, coaching, or support groups.
  • Preferred: experience working with diverse or underserved communities.
  • Preferred: bilingual Spanish/English ability.

Schedule and commitment

This is a part-time contractor opportunity of about 20 hours per week, though hours may vary depending on program needs. Availability during business hours is required, and evening or weekend availability would be an advantage.

Benefits

  • Fully remote, digital-first work environment.
  • Continued clinical training, peer consultation, and supervision.
  • Opportunity to help expand equitable access to maternal health support at scale.
