Maternal Health Peer Specialists help strengthen the care journey by offering empathetic, experience-based support. The goal is to help members feel understood, respected, and better able to choose what fits their needs, values, and situation.

This role is centered on support rather than direction: it creates space, shares perspective when useful, and helps members work through what feels right for them.

What You'll Do

• Deliver virtual peer support to members during pregnancy and after birth, drawing on personal lived experience.
• Provide compassionate listening, reassurance, and encouragement during important perinatal changes.
• Use personal experience selectively to normalize challenges and reduce feelings of isolation.
• Reach out to members and maintain engagement through structured workflows and communication tools.
• Help members work through common concerns such as emotional wellbeing, identity changes, recovery, feeding, sleep, and returning to work.
• Point members toward Canopie services such as coaching, classes, and clinical care when their needs call for it.
• Identify when a member may need clinical or additional support and follow established escalation procedures.
• Record member interactions accurately and consistently in Canopie's platform.
• Communicate with members by phone, video, and secure messaging.
• Take part in training, supervision, and ongoing peer support development.

Scope and Boundaries

• This is a non-clinical position and does not involve medical care or mental health treatment.
• Peer Specialists do not diagnose conditions or make care decisions for members.
• The role focuses on support, connection, and helping members access available resources.
• Clear escalation paths are in place for clinical concerns or higher-risk situations.

Schedule and Commitment

• This is a part-time contractor position, averaging about 20 hours per week, depending on program requirements.
• Availability during business hours is required, and evening or weekend availability is considered an advantage.

Requirements

• Personal experience with pregnancy and/or the postpartum period within the last 3 to 5 years.
• Ability to reflect on personal experience and use it thoughtfully to support others in an appropriate way.
• Some background in maternal health, peer support, community-based work, or caregiving.
• Comfort supporting people virtually and building rapport in a digital setting.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, paired with a warm and non-judgmental style.
• Ability to follow structured workflows while still showing authenticity in conversations.
• Strong comfort with digital tools such as video platforms, messaging systems, and documentation software.
• Dependable, well-organized, and responsive in a remote work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in peer support, whether formal or informal.
• Exposure to perinatal mental health, coaching, or support groups.
• Experience working with diverse or underserved communities.
• Bilingual ability in Spanish and English.
