The organization's mission is to ensure that everyone in Massachusetts receives compassionate, nonjudgmental care and educational resources. PPLM operates four health centers and provides telehealth services statewide as part of a network of 600 affiliates across the country.

Role Overview

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) plays an essential role within the health center team, delivering front desk assistance alongside direct patient care with professionalism and empathy. Responsibilities blend administrative tasks—including patient check-ins, appointment scheduling, and communication—with clinical support duties, such as obtaining vital signs, aiding procedures, and maintaining electronic health records. PCAs help create a welcoming, respectful environment for every patient throughout their appointment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial contact by greeting patients, visitors, and escorts warmly and respectfully
  • Handle patient check-in and check-out processes, schedule appointments, and manage contraceptive supply sales
  • Take and record vital signs; support clinical and laboratory procedures under supervision
  • Document patient information accurately and respectfully in electronic health records
  • Provide health education and assist with informed consent activities
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and adequate stocking of the health center in line with patient care standards
  • Work collaboratively with healthcare staff and foster a learning and respectful workplace culture

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED; medical assistant training is advantageous
  • Preferably 1 to 3 years of experience, especially in community health environments
  • Strong cultural awareness and commitment to promoting racial equity in healthcare
  • Comfortable interacting with a diverse patient population, including LGBTQ+ communities
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities
  • Physical capability to lift up to 30 pounds and stay active during shifts

Benefits and Work Environment

  • Competitive salary along with a comprehensive benefits package
  • Opportunities for career advancement and professional growth
  • Supportive, inclusive, and team-oriented culture

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commitment

PPLM embraces a culture of inclusivity and actively builds a workforce reflective of the communities served. They prioritize equity, diversity, and cultural humility to address health disparities effectively. The organization strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups including Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous people of color, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, LGBTQIA+ community members, people with disabilities, and working-class applicants.

Employment decisions at PPLM are made without discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected factors. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview processes.
