Job description

Role Overview

Queensland Parliament is hiring Parliamentary Security Officers to deliver protective security, observation, and emergency response services within the Parliamentary Precinct. The position supports the safety of Members, staff, visitors, and facilities while helping manage access, surveillance, and incident response in a unique public-sector environment.

This is an afternoon-shift role with a 15% shift allowance. Usual shift patterns are either 2:00pm to 10:30pm or 3:00pm to 11:30pm.

The work environment is high-profile and fast-moving, where alertness, teamwork, and practical decision-making are important to maintaining a secure workplace.

Key Objectives

  • Provide professional protective security services with a strong service focus.
  • Help manage safe entry, monitoring, and incident response across the precinct.
  • Support a secure and safe environment for everyone using the precinct.

Core Duties

  • Maintain a visible, professional security presence throughout the precinct.
  • Manage access control points, screening stations, and visitor entry areas.
  • Oversee CCTV, alarm systems, access systems, and control room activities.
  • Carry out patrols, building inspections, and security checks.
  • Respond to emergencies, incidents, and requests for assistance.
  • Support parliamentary sittings, events, and public visits while delivering strong customer service.
  • Assist with emergency response tasks, including evacuations and first aid support.
  • Produce clear incident reports, logs, and shift handover records.
  • Work with Members, staff, visitors, contractors, and relevant authorities.
  • Take part in training and ongoing improvement initiatives.

What You Should Bring

Ideal candidates will have experience in security, control room work, or customer-facing positions, though this is highly regarded rather than stated as mandatory. The role calls for strong communication and interpersonal skills, good judgement when assessing risk and escalation, and the ability to work both independently and in a team within a 24/7 setting.

Applicants should be comfortable working a range of shifts, including nights and sitting weeks, and be able to use security technology such as CCTV, access control, and alarm systems. Strong written communication is needed for documentation and reporting, and the ability to quickly understand parliamentary procedures and security protocols is important.

What We Offer

You will join a professional and supportive team at Queensland Parliament, helping maintain safety at the centre of Queensland’s democracy. The role offers meaningful work and practical experience in protective security.
