Packaging Operator - Royal Canin (Guelph, ON) with $3,000 Sign-On Bonus

Job Overview and Hours

This role involves packaging operations with a focus on quality control and directing the packaging team. Shifts are 12.5 hours long, with day shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM and night shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. The factory operates starting Sunday at 7 PM and closes Friday at 7:30 PM, with potential for overtime.

Compensation and Bonuses

The position offers a $3,000 sign-on bonus, paid in two installments of $1,500 at six and twelve months of employment. Additionally, a 4% shift premium is applied. Initial pay is expected in the range of CAD 23.65 to CAD 31.30 per hour.

Safety Requirements

• Use of all personal protective equipment (PPE) per OHSA and company standards is mandatory.
• Strict adherence to internal safety policies and procedures is required.
• Authority to halt any operations or external works if safety, environmental, or fire protection regulations are violated.

Environmental Responsibilities

• Implement and uphold ISO 14001 environmental standards and applicable procedures.
• Take ownership of specified environmental duties as outlined in the company's SEA Matrix.

Quality and Food Safety

• Comply with ISO 9001, FSSC 22000, Mars standards, and related procedures.
• Support the HACCP program within the department and follow GMP-GHP protocols.
• Report quality deviations promptly to Shift Supervisor and maintain critical control points (CCPs) and operational prerequisite programs (oPrPs) per SOPs.
• Conduct routine quality tests and micro sampling on products to ensure standards are achieved.
• Communicate any pest issues to management.

Human Resources and Leadership

• Develop multi-skills by acquiring at least one additional competency as directed by management.
• Participate in all scheduled training programs and provide training to other staff as assigned.
• Lead and coordinate the packaging workforce to meet production schedules.

Operational Duties

• Set up, operate, and monitor packaging machinery including paper and plastic bag machines, sampling machine, check-weigher, inkjet printer, labeler, wrappers, screeners, scales, and manage forklift and pallet truck operations.
• Stack finished packaged products in cases or on pallets following GMP standards.
• Conduct inventories of raw materials, packaging supplies, and finished goods, including cyclical and period-end counts.
• Perform daily equipment swabs and first-level maintenance of area equipment.
• Collaborate closely with extruder operators to maintain efficient plant operations and meet production targets.

Cleanliness and Housekeeping

• Execute housekeeping and cleaning activities to maintain 5S compliance.
• Perform changeover, weekly, hypo, and operational cleaning tasks.

Communication and Documentation

• Provide documentation to relevant departments following internal guidelines.
• During shift changes, communicate machine status, production progress, inventories, and quality concerns.
• Maintain accurate production records, including reports on stoppages, quantities, and quality events.

Qualifications and Experience

• Previous training or experience in related functional tasks is required; experience in feed or food manufacturing industries is preferred.
• Strong leadership skills, effective communication, initiative, team collaboration, cost awareness, safety focus, technical aptitude, and physical abilities such as unrestricted motion, color discrimination, sensory perception, depth perception, and tolerance for heat are important.
