What the role involves
The job combines desk-based duties with more active tasks. You may be involved in security checks at the gate, search procedures, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone use and CCTV. The role can also include lifting, carrying, and walking across prison grounds to escort vehicles and support daily operations.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This role may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving post that could be a strong starting point for a career in the prison service.

Career impact
This role offers a chance to contribute to public safety and support important work within the prison system. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some interaction may occur depending on the establishment. The position also helps build detailed knowledge of prison operations and may open pathways into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

You will receive training and opportunities to grow in the role, with scope for progression and professional development.
