Job description
Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This position sits within a collaborative team and covers a broad mix of duties, including security checks at the gate, search procedures, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The work is active and varied, with a combination of desk-based responsibilities and physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking escorts across the prison grounds.
What the role involves
As part of the day-to-day prison operation, you will support essential processes that help maintain order and safety. The role is fast moving and requires a practical, hands-on approach.
- Carry out gate security and search duties
- Manage incoming deliveries
- Oversee visitor movements and supervision
- Monitor phone calls and CCTV activity
- Support escorting duties across the prison estate
- Combine office-based work with physically active tasks
What we are looking for
No formal qualifications are required for this post. The ideal candidate will communicate clearly, remain composed in pressured situations, and bring sound judgement and common sense to the role. Being a reliable team player is essential.
This is a good entry point for someone seeking a career in prison services, especially if they can adapt to a busy environment and are comfortable working on different shifts, including nights and weekends.
Career development
The role offers exposure to how a prison functions on a daily basis and can open the door to progression into other prison-based roles. It may also create a pathway to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and support
You will receive training and opportunities to develop your skills and progress within the Civil Service environment.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Important notes
This post involves shift work, including weekends and nights. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officer roles, although there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment.
