Job description
Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is recruiting an Operational Support Grade to help with the daily operation of a busy prison. This position sits within a supportive team and covers a broad mix of duties, from gate security and searches to overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The work is active and varied, combining desk-based tasks with hands-on duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison site.
Who this role suits
This opportunity does not require formal qualifications. It could be a strong fit if you communicate clearly, stay composed when things get busy, and are able to make sensible decisions under pressure. A practical mindset, sound judgement, and a team-focused attitude are important in helping the prison run safely and efficiently.
What the role involves
As an OSG, you will work on shift patterns that include weekends and nights to support round-the-clock operations. The role offers a chance to contribute to public safety and to the important work carried out inside prisons every day. Your contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, although occasional interaction may happen depending on the establishment.
This post also gives you valuable insight into how a prison functions and can open doors to other roles within the prison service, including progression through the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the role includes a strong benefits package, training, and development support.
Additional information
You will receive 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis. In addition, you will get 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays. There is also access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
The employer also highlights opportunities for training, growth, and career progression within the wider prison service.
