Job description
Role Overview
Join HM Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP The Verne and HMP Portland, contributing to the smooth and secure operation of busy prisons. This multifaceted role involves responsibilities ranging from security checks and managing deliveries to supervising visitors and monitoring communications such as phone calls and CCTV.
Key Responsibilities
While the job incorporates administrative and desk-related tasks, it also requires physical activity including lifting, carrying, and walking across prison grounds to escort vehicles. Driving is a vital aspect of the role, so candidates must possess a full, valid UK driving license.
Candidate Profile
You do not need formal qualifications to apply, but strong communication abilities, calmness under pressure, sound judgement, common sense, and excellent teamwork skills are important. The role involves shift work, including nights and weekends, supporting the continuous functioning of the prison.
Career Impact
This position offers meaningful contribution to public safety and provides insight into prison operations. Interaction with prisoners is generally limited compared to prison officers, but occasional contact may occur depending on the facility. The OSG role opens doors for advancement, including eligibility for conversion schemes to Prison Officer roles.
