Role overview

HM Prison and Probation Service is looking for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Guys Marsh. This position is central to the smooth, safe, and efficient running of a busy prison environment.

What the job involves

You will support a wide range of day-to-day prison operations. The role includes security checks and gate searches, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. It is an active position that combines desk-based work with physically demanding duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the site.

Working style

This is a fast-moving role that suits someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressured situations, and works effectively as part of a team. You will be expected to cover a mix of shifts, including weekends and night duties.

Candidate fit

No formal qualifications are required. Strong judgement, common sense, and a cooperative attitude are more important. The role offers a chance to build experience in a prison setting and could lead to other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and development

You will receive training and development support, along with opportunities to progress within the wider prison service.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. Along with base pay, the package includes annual leave, public holiday entitlement, apprenticeship access, and several employee benefits.
