Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is looking for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Guys Marsh. This is a hands-on position where you help keep a busy prison running safely and efficiently.
The work is varied and active. It includes security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring telephone activity and CCTV. The role combines desk-based duties with physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
What the role involves
- Supporting the daily operation of the prison as part of a team.
- Carrying out security duties and gate searches.
- Receiving and managing deliveries.
- Overseeing visitors and maintaining order.
- Observing phone calls and CCTV activity.
- Handling a mix of administrative and physical work.
- Walking, lifting, and carrying items when required.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed when things get busy, and works effectively with others. Good judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team-focused approach are important.
You should be comfortable working a fast-moving shift pattern that includes evenings, weekends, and night shifts.
Career development
This position offers a rare opportunity to contribute to public safety and support important work carried out in prisons. While prisoner contact is usually limited, there may be occasional interaction depending on the site.
The role also provides valuable insight into how a prison operates and may open doors to other prison-based roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Training and progression
You will receive training, along with opportunities to develop your skills and progress within the service.

The salary for this role is £29,432.
- 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
