Job description
Role overview
A Naval Service Recruit joins the General Service of the Naval Service, which is the maritime arm of the Irish Defence Forces. The training pathway includes Recruit Training and Able Rate Courses, with a strong focus on military discipline, physical conditioning, seamanship, weapon handling, and naval operations. This position offers the chance to serve in a professional team that patrols and safeguards Ireland's territorial waters.
What the role involves
- Take part in intensive recruit training to build core military skills and discipline.
- Learn seamanship, weapons handling, and operational fundamentals for service at sea.
- Support shipboard activity after qualification as an Able Rate.
- Carry out general maintenance, boat operations, fire response, damage control, and boarding-team duties during drug interdiction work.
- Complete further specialist training if you choose to progress in the Naval Service.
Profile expected from applicants
Candidates should be comfortable in a structured military setting, enjoy working as part of a team, and be able to perform under pressure in a physically demanding environment. A readiness to deploy to sea with the Irish Naval Service is also expected.
Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must be aged 18 to under 39 at the time of application progression, and proof of age will be required at the next competition stage.
- Minimum height required is 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm); this will be checked during selection.
- No tattoos may be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces; visible tattoos in this area can prevent progression.
- Candidates must satisfy the working permit / residency criteria to serve in the Defence Forces, meaning at least 5 years of eligibility to remain in Ireland; supporting proof will be requested.
- Medical, physical, and security vetting standards must all be met during the recruitment process.
Training and career path
- Basic recruit training lasts 13 weeks and is aimed at developing a fit, disciplined, and motivated recruit with foundational military capability.
- After recruit training, successful candidates return to Naval Base training for Ordinary to Able Rate progression in one of the following areas: Seamanship, Communications, Mechanicians, or Supplies.
- Once qualified, recruits are promoted to Able Rate and posted to a Naval Service vessel.
- The posting includes a two-year sea rotation.
- Further development and specialisation opportunities are available for those who want to advance their Naval Service career.
Work location
The permanent base for this role is Naval Base, Haulbowline, Co. Cork.
