Job description
About the role
The University Museum of Zoology in Cambridge houses roughly two million specimens spanning the animal kingdom from the past and present, with about 5,000 items on public display. Its collections are recognised as nationally and internationally important, contributing to understanding both animal history and the history of science. The museum is also a major attraction in Cambridgeshire, drawing over 150,000 visitors annually, including more than 5,000 UK schoolchildren on educational visits.
The museum is looking for a warm, dependable, and approachable part-time receptionist to create a strong front-of-house presence and support access for the public and University community.
Key duties
Working at the main reception desk, you will greet visitors during opening hours and act as a helpful first contact for enquiries made in person or by phone. You will also be the initial point of contact for any safety or security concerns in the gallery spaces. This role calls for calm judgement, initiative, and confidence in handling different situations as they arise.
Training and working pattern
You will be expected to complete first aid and fire warden training as part of the position. The normal working pattern is Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Fixed-term arrangement
This appointment is fixed term and funded until 30 November 2027, or until the current post holder returns, whichever happens first.
Internal candidate information
Applications are invited only from internal candidates, including those seeking to take up the position on secondment from their current University role.
Application and contact details
Informal questions about the role may be sent to Lisa Sneath at ls761@cam.ac.uk. Questions about the application process should be directed to the Zoology HR Office at hr@zoo.cam.ac.uk. Please use reference PF50224 in your application and in any related correspondence.
