About the Role

This exceptional executive position offers the chance to shape the future of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most treasured natural landmarks globally, along with other World Heritage Areas in Queensland. As Executive Director, you will spearhead Queensland’s comprehensive government initiatives focused on protecting these vital ecological and cultural assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct strategic leadership of Queensland’s agenda for the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage conservation, driving complex interdepartmental priorities.
  • Manage governance, coordination, and implementation of significant statewide programs aligning with government and ministerial objectives.
  • Develop and nurture impactful partnerships across government branches, Traditional Owners, industries, research bodies, community groups, and Commonwealth entities.
  • Champion collaborative efforts that promote stewardship and sustainable outcomes for World Heritage sites.
  • Provide expert advice to Ministers, the Director-General, and senior leadership on environmental policies, program challenges, and strategic direction.
  • Represent Queensland at high-level meetings, national committees, and forums linked to Reef and World Heritage protection.
  • Lead a dynamic team emphasizing collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continual improvement.
  • Oversee program governance, including performance monitoring, reporting, and risk management across a complex portfolio.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an accomplished senior executive with deep expertise in managing complex environmental programs and achieving strategic targets through effective stakeholder collaboration. You bring a strong track record of influential leadership, skillful negotiation, and the ability to unify diverse interest groups including government, traditional communities, and industry sectors. Excellent communication capabilities are essential, capable of engaging at all levels from Ministers to community representatives. Experience in fostering high-performing teams and an unwavering commitment to environmental protection form the core of your leadership approach.
