About the Role
Halcome Management Services seeks compassionate and detail-oriented individuals for the Bank Hospital in Accra, Ghana, opening in the second quarter of 2021. The Mortuary Technician will manage mortuary operations, assist in post-mortem examinations, and provide support to the relatives of the deceased with empathy and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the mortuary and its equipment ensuring cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency at all times.
- Manage the receipt, storage, and release of bodies, ensuring proper conditions are met and coordinating with portering staff during off-hours.
- Maintain accurate records and collaborate effectively with internal departments and funeral parlour representatives.
- Prepare bodies for post-mortem examinations as directed by pathologists, including restoring bodies after autopsies.
- Assist with the removal of organs for research and transplant purposes upon medical staff requests.
- Handle, label, and manage specimens for histology, demonstration, or photographic documentation.
- Provide sensitive customer service, escorting and assisting relatives while adhering to professional protocols.
- Perform photography of gross specimens as required.
- Support tissue organization and removal in coordination with the National Blood Service and Tissue Donation Services.
- Comply with all departmental health and safety guidelines, including during high-risk post-mortem procedures.
- Execute specialized post-mortem techniques, such as removal of temporal bones, brain, and spinal cord, and assist in research projects.
- Support hospital post-mortem diagnosis and teaching, ensuring compliance with legal and documentation standards.
- Manage consumable and reagent inventory and stock control.
- Participate in investigations related to incidents, liaising with wards and escalating issues as needed.
- Ensure adherence to document control systems within the mortuary.
- Respond promptly to enquiries, incident follow-ups, and complaints.
- Assist in training and supervising junior medical staff in post-mortem techniques.
- Contribute to the induction of new nursing staff by instructing on death-related procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Anatomical Pathology or an equivalent qualification.
- Membership in a relevant professional body.
- A minimum of two years' mortuary experience, with private hospital exposure preferred.
- Proficiency in verbal and written English communication for effective coordination with team members and external agencies.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Capability to handle and transfer bodies safely between trolleys, post-mortem tables, and refrigerated storage.
- Highly accurate, neat, and efficient in performing tasks.
- Flexibility regarding working hours.
- Good organizational and workload management skills.
