Role Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Mortgage Underwriter to join our expanding Mortgage Operations team based in Frisco, TX, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring two days per week onsite. The role involves assessing both Conventional and FHA mortgage loan applications with a focus on speed, accuracy, and compliance in a high-volume environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine mortgage applications adhering to investor and government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) regulations.
- Perform thorough analyses of borrower creditworthiness, income sources—including complex and self-employed income—and collateral documentation.
- Conduct liquidity assessments for business entities using Schedule L, accounting for inventory-heavy operations.
- Make timely underwriting decisions compliant with company and investor standards.
- Manage a substantial workload balancing quality control and production service level agreements, targeting five or more new credit decisions daily.
- Collaborate with processors and loan officers to resolve conditions and facilitate a smooth loan process.
- Recognize and escalate any potential fraud risks or deviations from guidelines.
- Utilize comprehensive knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU), Loan Prospector (LP), and investor overlay guidelines effectively.
- Engage in ongoing process enhancements through team collaboration and constructive feedback.
Candidate Requirements
- At least two years of recent experience underwriting Conventional and FHA mortgage loans.
- Strong analytical skills and capacity for independent risk evaluation.
- Proficiency in using DU, LP, and FHA Connection systems.
- Expertise in analyzing self-employed income and conducting Schedule L liquidity tests.
- Deep understanding of credit policies, financial statement interpretation, and property valuations.
- Excellent communication skills to clearly articulate complex underwriting scenarios.
- Experience balancing high-quality control standards with meeting production goals.
- Familiarity with Texas-specific lending regulations is preferred.
- Must be available for a hybrid schedule with two days on-site in Frisco, TX.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active SAR (Secondary Approval Rights) or VA credit authority.
- Current FDA DE (Direct Endorsement) certification.
- Experience underwriting Jumbo or USDA loans.
- Possession of a college degree.
- Background in detecting fraud or mitigating risk.
