Role overview

This is a fixed-term, full-time registrar position for the 2027 training year in the Microbiology Department. The role focuses on delivering high-quality diagnostic microbiology and infection prevention and control support in a tertiary paediatric environment. You will work alongside senior microbiologists and clinical teams to contribute to patient care, infection management, and the smooth functioning of laboratory services.

The position is classified under Medical Officer training roles, with salary and employment conditions determined by the enterprise agreement, plus superannuation.

What you will do

• Support diagnostic microbiology work across bacteriology, virology, and serology.
• Take part in clinical liaison and multidisciplinary case discussions to improve patient outcomes.
• Contribute to infection prevention, control, and antimicrobial stewardship activities.
• Build technical and interpretive capability in paediatric and women’s microbiology.
• Participate in quality improvement efforts and service enhancement initiatives.

What the department does

The Microbiology Department delivers comprehensive diagnostic services for children and adolescents. It also provides consulting Infectious Diseases support to the Royal Women’s Hospital and medical input into infection prevention and control services across the Children’s and Women’s Hospitals, working closely with clinical teams to ensure timely and accurate results.

Other requirements

• A current National Criminal Record Check, or willingness to obtain one.
• A valid Working with Children Check.
• Compliance with RCH staff immunisation requirements.
• Annual influenza vaccination is required for Category A and B roles, unless a recognised medical exemption applies and has been accepted by the hospital.
• Applicants must provide an Australian Government Immunisation History Statement, as RCH collects, records, and retains vaccination information.
• Compliance with any hospital direction to be vaccinated against, or prove immunity to, other diseases, unless a valid exemption applies.
• Employment offers are subject to successful background checks, including reference checks.
