About the Role
Join Backpack Healthcare as a Medical Records and Health Information Manager and play a critical role in establishing and leading our Health Information Management (HIM) department. This full-time, remote position offers a chance to impact behavioral healthcare delivery across multiple states by developing efficient records systems and enforcing compliance and privacy standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all operations related to medical records and release of information processes.
- Ensure full compliance with HIPAA laws, applicable state regulations, payer standards, and CARF accreditation requirements.
- Create and implement scalable workflows, policies, and tracking mechanisms to optimize HIM processes.
- Develop and analyze metrics that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround times.
- Collaborate with Compliance, Legal, Clinical Operations, Technology, and Quality teams to drive organizational objectives.
- Train staff on medical records management, documentation standards, and privacy protocols.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for health information management and patient rights access.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in Health Information Management or related healthcare operations, preferably 5+ years.
- In-depth knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Rules and medical record regulations.
- Proven ability to handle high volumes of medical record requests and sensitive information securely.
- Strong organizational capabilities and meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience developing operational workflows, policies, standard operating procedures, and process improvements.
- Sound judgment in managing complex and legally sensitive requests.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Preferred certifications include RHIA, RHIT, CHPS, CHPC, CHP, or active pursuit of similar credentials.
- Experience working in behavioral health, pediatrics, Medicaid, telehealth, CARF accreditation, or across multiple states is advantageous.
- Familiarity with electronic health records systems, patient portals, secure health information exchange, and release-of-information service providers.
