Job description

Role summary

An opportunity is available for a permanent part-time Medical Laboratory Assistant to join the Pathology Specimen Reception team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The post is based within Blood Sciences and supports a diagnostic service by carrying out a broad range of laboratory support duties.

About the team and workplace

You will work with a supportive and knowledgeable Blood Sciences team made up of Consultants, Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, and Associate Practitioners. The department welcomes visits, which can be arranged in advance.

What the role involves

This position is suited to someone who is self-driven, careful, well organised, and able to stay composed when pressure is high. Strong communication and observation skills are important, along with an enjoyment of collaborative work.

The role includes handling patient samples at the pre-analytical stage, completing data entry, preparing chemical solutions, keeping consumable stock levels supplied, disposing of chemical and/or biological waste safely, and cleaning and maintaining complex laboratory equipment.

Working pattern

This is a 30-hour weekly post, worked Monday to Friday. Availability is needed between 07:00 and 21:00. The role also requires participation in a 7-day rota, which may include evenings, nights, weekends, and Bank/Public holidays depending on service demand. Flexibility is therefore essential.

Experience and training

Prior work in an NHS clinical laboratory or experience with analytical techniques would be helpful, but it is not mandatory because full training will be provided. This is not a trainee Biomedical Scientist position.

The employer is looking for someone interested in building a long-term career as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. The role is considered more suitable for candidates who do not already hold a degree qualification.

Education and application notes

A good standard of secondary education is required, including English, Maths, and Science GCSEs at grade 9-4 or an equivalent qualification. Applicants should clearly list their GCSE grades on the application form and ensure they meet the person specification, otherwise their application may not be taken forward.

In periods of high application volume, the vacancy may be withdrawn before the published closing date, so early application is recommended.

Values and approach

The organisation’s vision is to keep patients at the centre of everything it does. Compassion, dignity, empathy, and respectful communication are expected from every team member, whether clinical or non-clinical. Staff are expected to listen carefully, communicate clearly and kindly, and respond to others with patience and understanding so that compassionate care is reflected in every interaction.
