Job description

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated individual to join York Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Blood Science Reception department. As part of a supportive and dedicated team, you will contribute to delivering prompt, high-quality services to our patients and service users.

Key Duties

  • Receive samples from hospital wards and surrounding GP practices.
  • Enter patient information and test requests into the laboratory information system.
  • Prepare samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Load samples onto appropriate analyzers.
  • Respond to inquiries from medical personnel and other users.
  • Perform general administrative and housekeeping tasks within the laboratory.

Candidate Profile

The ideal applicant will have a sound basic education and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Organizational ability, attention to detail, and a fundamental understanding of computer systems are necessary. While prior experience in an NHS pathology laboratory is beneficial, it is not essential as comprehensive training will be provided. Our laboratory holds UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189:2022 and is an IBMS approved training site.

Working Conditions

This role supports the Blood Science 24/7 service and requires participation in a shift rota covering evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Benefits

  • Membership of the NHS Pension Scheme with retirement benefits and dependent provisions.
  • Annual leave starting at 27 days, increasing to up to 33 days based on NHS service length.
  • Relocation assistance up to 30% of salary (maximum £18,000) available for hard-to-fill positions requiring relocation.
  • Multiple categories of paid and unpaid leave for personal and emergency reasons.
  • Confidential 24/7 employee support through the Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Access to NHS Car Lease and Cycle to Work schemes.
  • Extensive professional development and learning opportunities.
  • Discounts across various retail, leisure, and lifestyle providers.
