Job description
Role overview
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated Medical Examiner Officer to join a busy Medical Examiner Service overseen by the Trust’s Lead Medical Examiner. You will work within a compact team of Medical Examiner Officers under the direction of the Lead Medical Examiner Officer, supporting the Trust’s Medical Examiners in delivering the service.
About the service
The Medical Examiner Service reviews deaths that occur in the Trust’s acute hospitals, as well as community deaths in Lambeth and Southwark. The team works closely with both internal and external partners, including Coroners’ Offices, to help bereaved families move through death registration and funeral arrangements with appropriate support.
Working arrangement
The main place of work will be the Medical Examiner Office at St Thomas’ Hospital, where you will work alongside the Duty Medical Examiner for the day, the Lead Medical Examiner Officer, the wider MEO team, and the existing Bereavement Administrators. Some occasional travel across sites may be needed between the Guy’s and St Thomas’ locations, and occasionally to satellite inpatient units if required.
Key duties
- Support Medical Examiners in reviewing the circumstances surrounding a death and the likely cause of death.
- Act as a knowledgeable contact for bereaved relatives, healthcare staff, Medical Examiners, Medical Examiner Officers, Medical Examiner Administrators, Bereavement Administrators, the H.M. Coroner, and registration services.
About the trust
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most accomplished foundation trusts, providing specialist services in areas such as heart and lung care, cancer, and renal medicine, alongside a wide range of local hospital and community services for people in Lambeth and Southwark. The Trust also has a strong history of clinical and scientific excellence and, through King’s Health Partners, forms part of one of England’s eight academic health sciences centres. It also hosts one of the National Institute for Health Research biomedical research centres, created with King’s College London in 2007, and offers dedicated clinical research facilities.
Values and culture
The Trust aims to recruit and keep outstanding staff, recognising that employee commitment and expertise are central to high-quality, safe, patient-focused care. The post holder is expected to work in line with the Trust’s organisational values:
- Caring – placing patients first
- Ambitious – innovating and striving for excellence
- Inclusive – respecting one another and working collaboratively
The Trust also refers to its values and behaviours framework, which explains how these principles are put into practice across the organisation.
