About the Role

Join a leading North American office furniture manufacturer based in North York, Ontario, as a Mechanical Product Design Engineer. This position emphasizes true engineering innovations beyond mere CAD drafting, offering the opportunity to transform concepts into fully produced products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the mechanical design of new products from initial concept through production launch.
  • Develop innovative engineering solutions optimizing performance, manufacturability, quality, cost, and visual appeal.
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings utilizing SolidWorks software.
  • Design components and assemblies incorporating materials such as sheet metal, plastics, wood, tubing, castings, and extrusions, considering relevant manufacturing techniques.
  • Collaborate with prototype shops and manufacturing teams to build and assess prototypes.
  • Plan and execute rigorous product tests evaluating performance, durability, ergonomics, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Diagnose and rectify technical challenges via iterative design modifications and engineering analysis.
  • Prepare comprehensive engineering documentation including bills of materials (BOMs), drawings, specifications, and change notices.
  • Partner closely with suppliers to develop components, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Support pilot builds, production launches, and continuous product optimization efforts.
  • Engage in value engineering and initiatives aimed at continuous improvement.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience in mechanical product design within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient in advanced SolidWorks techniques, with experience in designing intricate mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong understanding and application of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
  • Proven track record of successfully guiding products from conceptualization to market launch.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and product testing.
  • Familiarity with various manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, woodwork, welded assemblies, tubing, castings, and extrusions.
  • Excellent practical problem-solving skills and engineering acumen.
  • Possession of or eligibility for Ontario P.Eng. licensure.

Additional Details

Experience in office furniture manufacturing is beneficial but not essential. Candidates with engineering backgrounds from automotive, consumer products, appliances, durable goods, or industrial equipment sectors are highly encouraged to apply.
