Health and Safety Coordinator

About the Role

Our client is an expanding chemical manufacturing company with two operational facilities located in Etobicoke. They seek a proactive Safety Coordinator to oversee Health & Safety initiatives directly at the plant level. This role involves ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, fostering a robust safety culture, and actively protecting employees on the production floor daily. It is a highly visible, hands-on position, ideal for safety professionals experienced in industrial or chemical manufacturing environments who are passionate about leading safety programs rather than merely maintaining them.

Key Responsibilities

• Organize and lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and employee health & safety education sessions across both locations.
• Offer daily health and safety support and advice to supervisors and frontline staff.
• Promote safety culture through direct engagement on the floor, continuous improvement efforts, and employee involvement.
• Ensure full adherence to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) along with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry standards.
• Create, implement, and update Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies, and work instructions.
• Manage and enhance the company’s health and safety management system routinely.
• Coordinate relationships with external vendors such as trainers, industrial hygiene assessors, and confined space program specialists.
• Oversee corrective and preventative measures arising from incidents, inspections, and audits.
• Perform regular workplace inspections and conduct internal health and safety audits at both facilities.
• Detect hazards, carry out risk assessments, and apply effective corrective actions.
• Lead investigations into incidents, producing root cause analysis reports and developing action plans.
• Maintain tracking and analysis of safety metrics, trends, and key performance indicators.
• Act as the primary on-site expert for Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) compliance.
• Ensure proper documentation, training records, and regulatory reporting are maintained accurately.
• Support environmental compliance, emergency response activities, and other related initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of post-secondary studies in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of four years’ experience in health and safety within chemical manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, or processing settings.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario's Occupational Health & Safety Act and associated regulations.
• Experience in developing SOPs and delivering health and safety training to frontline personnel.
• Skilled in carrying out internal audits, workplace inspections, and incident investigations.
• Knowledgeable in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and health & safety documentation management systems.
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
• Familiarity with ISO 45001, SMETA, or ILO audit standards considered a strong advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified or in the process of becoming a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC).
• First Aid and Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) certifications.
