Job description

Role overview

GHD is looking for Mechanical Engineers with a strong interest in water infrastructure to join its New Zealand Pacific Water team. This is an expression of interest for people who want to contribute to projects that improve water outcomes for communities and support more resilient infrastructure in the face of floods, droughts and storms.

The opportunity suits engineers who enjoy solving challenging problems, developing practical solutions, and working across multidisciplinary teams. The roles may suit candidates with around five years of relevant experience up to highly experienced lead mechanical engineers, where the work can influence strategy for three waters design capability.

The position is available across New Zealand, with consideration for GHD offices in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Tauranga and Wellington.

What you will do

  • Investigate water infrastructure issues in depth and turn findings into sound engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to detailed mechanical design work for water, wastewater, stormwater treatment plants and pump stations, with a solid grasp of hydraulics.
  • Apply New Zealand codes and standards to maintain compliance and quality across projects.
  • Communicate clearly with clients, colleagues and stakeholders through both written and verbal channels.
  • Use modelling and CAD tools such as Inventor and AutoCAD, or guide others in their use, to support accurate mechanical system design.
  • Approach problems with practical lateral thinking and develop effective ways through technical challenges.
  • Identify technical risks and help develop mitigation plans that support long-term project success.
  • Work collaboratively within a team environment and contribute to strong project outcomes.
  • Build trusted client relationships and align engineering solutions with client goals.

Candidate profile

You should be motivated by complex engineering challenges and interested in delivering innovative mechanical solutions for the water sector. The role calls for someone who can combine analytical thinking, technical judgement and strong communication skills. Experience across water infrastructure, mechanical design, and relevant software tools will be important, along with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and clients.

About the working arrangement

This role follows a hybrid model. Team members are expected to work from the office three days each week, while still benefiting from flexibility on the other days.

Application notes

Applicants are asked to submit a CV and a cover letter that explains their experience and their vision for the role. GHD has also requested that agency resumes not be submitted at this stage.
