Job description

About the Organization

Common App is a U.S. national nonprofit focused on making college admissions more accessible, fair, and trustworthy. The organization supports over 1 million students each year, including many first-generation applicants, as they use the free Common App platform to apply to more than 1,100 member colleges and universities. The team is mission-driven and uses technology and communications to improve the admissions experience for students and institutions.

This opening is for an experienced marketing writer who can contribute to a purpose-led organization and help shape messaging for a broad set of audiences in higher education.

Role Overview

The Marketing Writer will join the Marketing & Brand team and report to the Director of Product Marketing. The role is centered on creating persuasive, audience-first marketing content that inspires action and supports the organization’s services and products. It also plays an important part in go-to-market efforts for new programs and product launches, including materials that help sales and service teams communicate effectively.

This position is also responsible for identifying content needs and developing collateral with strong narratives that inform, engage, and motivate audiences such as colleges, students, and their supporters.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will create marketing language and written assets that are tailored to specific audiences and aligned with product and service goals.

  • Develop clear, persuasive messaging that supports marketing objectives and encourages audience action.
  • Contribute written content for new program and product launches, including enablement materials for sales and service teams.
  • Identify opportunities for collateral and create content that tells a compelling story while educating target audiences.
  • Write for multiple audience groups, including colleges, students, and the people who support them.

Requirements

  • You must reside in the United States.
  • You should be open to traveling twice each year for the Common App retreat.
  • You need 3 to 5 years of professional experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, marketing, or a closely related discipline is required, or you may qualify with an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Experience creating personalized marketing materials such as email campaigns, sales enablement assets, and lead generation collateral is expected.
  • You should be comfortable using email marketing tools, digital publishing tools, and Google Workspace.
  • You need a collaborative approach and the ability to turn complex ideas into engaging content.
  • You must be able to produce content that moves audiences to act, including translating product updates, services, and engagement opportunities into concise and motivating copy.
  • Strong analytical thinking is needed to interpret engagement data, audience research, and feedback so you can better understand audience needs and pain points.
  • You should be able to coordinate multiple projects, manage competing deadlines, and work independently with several stakeholders.
  • Hands-on skill with marketing and communications tools is important for producing and distributing targeted outreach.
  • You should be able to collaborate effectively and provide peer review or guidance to keep work aligned across the department.
  • Flexibility is important, as priorities and materials may need to change based on organizational needs or feedback.
  • Preferred experience includes project planning and management, work in a fast-moving environment, familiarity with state or federal government or agency settings, knowledge of higher education issues, prior higher education experience, and experience in nonprofits, educational institutions, or education technology.
