Job description

About the role

KPMG New Zealand is seeking experienced consulting professionals to join its Wellington Management Consulting team at Senior Advisor, Assistant Manager, Manager, or Senior Manager level. This role is focused on advising government agencies, corporates, and Māori organisations on major transformation and performance challenges that influence how services are delivered and how change is implemented across Aotearoa.

The position suits people who can contribute to strategic problem-solving in a fast-moving consulting environment and who want to help shape significant public and private sector programmes. Priority experience includes Machinery of Government (MoG), Better Business Case (BBC) methodology, project or programme delivery, operational readiness, transition support, operating model design, and change management.

What you'll do

  • Take ownership of workstreams and coordinate project teams across complex client engagements, ensuring strong-quality analysis and recommendations.
  • Support transformation initiatives through delivery work such as defining requirements, providing PMO support, or leading change-related activities.
  • Use MoG and BBC knowledge in operational delivery, transition planning, business case development, and operating model design to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Help generate new business through proposal development, thought leadership, and contributions to KPMG’s consulting methods and tools.
  • Manage multiple engagements at once while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and delivery pace.
  • Strengthen KPMG’s profile through sound judgement, excellent client service, and practical, innovative ideas.

What we're looking for

  • Experience in one or more of the following: MoG with solid familiarity in BBC methodology; MoG operational delivery including readiness, transition, operating model design, business case work, or Op Pol-type responsibilities; project, programme, or PMO experience in the public or private sector; change management on major transformation programmes; or a background in Big 4, general consulting, or public sector advisory aligned with the firm’s service offerings.
  • Proven consulting experience and the ability to develop durable client relationships.
  • Confidence in business development and spotting opportunities to grow client work.
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply its principles in policy, operating model design, and transformation settings.
  • Practical experience working with Māori stakeholders and incorporating Māori perspectives and aspirations into delivery.
  • Commitment to developing capability in te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo through KPMG’s He Kōtui pathways.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a collaborative mindset that works well across disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive, practical, and delivery-focused approach.

Benefits and support

  • Access to the firm’s annual incentive scheme.
  • Opportunities for local and international secondments.
  • Hybrid working arrangements across office, client, and home hubs, recognising different working preferences and circumstances.
