Job description

Role overview

Gloucestershire County Council is hiring a permanent full-time Logistic Officer (Two Person Crew) to work from Hempsted, Gloucester. The position pays £30,024 to £32,597 per year and requires 37 hours per week. This vacancy closes on 13/07/2026 and carries requisition number 14328. The role is not available as a job share.

Gloucestershire Equipment Loan Service (GELS) supports the local care system by distributing, delivering, collecting, maintaining and carrying out minor adaptations to medical equipment. The service helps people leave hospital safely and supports them to live independently at home. It operates on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council and One Gloucestershire.

What the job involves

This is a hands-on post combining driving, manual handling, equipment fitting and installation, carried out alongside an assistant as part of a two-person crew. Work is carried out across Gloucestershire from the Hempsted base. You will be expected to lift, carry and fit items such as bariatric beds, hoists, shower chairs and walking frames in customers’ homes.

Key duties

  • Carry out daily vehicle checks, including the van’s overall condition, safety items, fluid levels and tyre pressure, and arrange repairs or servicing with the transport team when needed.
  • Load the vehicle efficiently so deliveries and collections can be completed in the most effective way.
  • Make sure equipment collections are handled properly and that additional items are recorded while out in the field.
  • Follow infection prevention and personal protective equipment guidance at all times.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the wider team to help solve operational issues.
  • Fit and install medical equipment in line with instructions from health prescribers.

What the council is looking for

The ideal candidate will be an experienced van driver with strong driving ability and a solid understanding of Gloucestershire’s road network. Experience in multi-drop deliveries and collections, equipment fitting or installation, customer-facing work, warehouse processes, and supporting people with complex needs would be valuable.

A full UK driving licence is required. This role will also require an Enhanced DBS check.

Training and working style

Full training and support will be provided to help you settle into the role. The council is seeking someone whose working style reflects its values and who can contribute positively to a supportive team environment.

Pay, hours and contract

  • Salary: £30,024 to £32,597 per annum
  • Working hours: 37.00 hours per week
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Location: Hempsted, Gloucester

Benefits

  • Annual leave starts at 25.5 days and increases to 30.5 days after 5 years of service, plus bank holidays.
  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Free offsite parking.
  • Regular formal and informal support.
  • A safe, supportive and positive workplace culture.
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Access to a staff discount scheme with savings at major supermarkets and high street retailers.
  • Access to a free, confidential Employee Assistance Programme with counselling and advice available 24/7 online and by phone.
  • Employee network groups including Prism (LGBT+) and the Young Employees Network.
  • Access to the Gloucestershire Salary Sacrifice Green Car Scheme, subject to terms and conditions.
  • Access to the Cycle to Work Salary Sacrifice Scheme.

How to apply

Applications should be written with reference to the criteria in the job profile. Candidates should include examples showing why they are suitable, along with relevant experience, skills and knowledge. English and Maths GCSE qualifications, or equivalent, should also be included in the application form.

For an informal discussion with the Team Manager, candidates may use the contact details provided in the source listing.

Eligibility and other conditions

The council is unable to provide sponsorship for this role. Applicants must already have the right to work and be able to commit to at least 6 months of employment. Right to work status cannot be transferred from a sponsored role with another employer.

Applicants for customer-facing roles must be able to demonstrate fluent spoken English under immigration requirements.

Hybrid working is available for most council roles, but this post is primarily operational and based in Hempsted, Gloucester.

The council may close the vacancy early if it receives a high volume of applications, so early submission is recommended.

Internal applicants who believe they are covered by the Equality Act 2010 disability definition may notify recruitment by email to be considered for a guaranteed interview under the Disability Confident pledge if they meet all essential criteria. This also helps the recruiting manager arrange reasonable adjustments during the process.

Applicants who are currently on Gloucestershire County Council’s redeployment register or at risk of redundancy will be considered first at the shortlisting stage.

Safeguarding and inclusion

Gloucestershire County Council is committed to protecting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all staff and volunteers to share that commitment.
