Role Overview

This part-time, on-site consulting role is based in Brooklyn, NY. The Literacy Coach Consultant for grades K–5 partners with school leaders and teachers to strengthen literacy instruction through practices aligned with the Science of Reading and structured literacy. The consultant’s work includes modeling effective lessons, co-developing and refining curriculum, observing classroom instruction, and offering practical feedback and coaching. The role also involves analyzing student assessment data, identifying learning needs, helping design targeted interventions, and reinforcing predictable instructional routines. In addition, the consultant supports professional learning for small groups or entire staffs and helps build a collaborative culture focused on improving literacy outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Demonstrate effective literacy lessons for K–5 classrooms.
• Partner with teachers to plan, improve, and align literacy curriculum and instruction.
• Observe classroom teaching and provide clear, usable coaching feedback.
• Review student data to spot skill gaps and guide intervention planning.
• Support the development of consistent literacy routines and classroom practices.
• Facilitate professional learning sessions for small groups or full school teams.
• Build strong working relationships with school leaders and instructional staff.
• Use coaching and real-time support to strengthen teaching practice and student outcomes.

Qualifications

• Strong expertise in elementary literacy instruction, especially grades K–5.
• Deep familiarity with the Science of Reading and structured literacy approaches.
• Experience developing or aligning curriculum for elementary reading instruction.
• Proven ability to coach teachers through observation, modeling, and feedback.
• Background in education or instructional leadership, ideally in K–5 settings.
• Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; advanced study or specialized literacy training is preferred.
• Successful classroom teaching experience in elementary grades with evidence of improved literacy results.
• Ability to use assessment and progress-monitoring data to inform instruction and intervention.
• Familiarity with tools or programs such as Heggerty, UFLI, Phonics for Reading, REWARDS, and/or S.P.I.R.E. is preferred.
• Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work on-site in Brooklyn, NY on a part-time consulting schedule.
