Job description
Role overview
AltaLink is hiring a Line Design & Project Engineer for its Project Development - Lines & Civil Engineering team in Calgary. This is a permanent full-time role at job level ENG C/D, reporting to the Manager, Lines & Civil Engineering.
The position combines transmission line design expertise with project engineering leadership across capital, customer, Direct Assign, rebuild, modification, maintenance and urgent restoration work. The role spans the full project lifecycle, from early concept development and scoping through detailed design, construction support, acceptance, energization and final close-out.
One position is confirmed, and a second hire may also be made from this opening.
AltaLink powers Alberta by operating transmission lines that deliver electricity to millions of people every day. The organization emphasizes safety, collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement and respect, with a strong focus on inclusive and high-performing teamwork.
What you will do
- Own the engineering and line design scope for assigned transmission projects from initial scoping through close-out.
- Develop calculations, studies, bills of material and complete design packages for capital, customer, Direct Assign and system work.
- Create PLS-CADD models for new design packages, clearance checks, line ratings, reconductoring reviews and optimization studies.
- Produce line design packages across AltaLink voltage classes, including 69kV, 138kV, 240kV and 500kV projects.
- Prepare and maintain design basis memorandums, scope documents, technical requirements and estimating inputs.
- Lead early design options, route and structure alternatives, constructability reviews, material choices and design-change decisions.
- Guide internal and external designers, EPC partners, construction teams and field stakeholders on standards, assumptions, safety, quality and constructability.
- Review IFCR and IFC packages, drawings, specifications, material lists and engineering submissions for completeness and compliance.
- Coordinate deliverables such as staking, material review, as-built/as-recorded updates and RDDL requirements with project teams.
- Resolve field issues, technical comments, redlines, material concerns and other close-out actions during construction support.
- Apply geotechnical and foundation knowledge when evaluating soil conditions, groundwater, foundation reactions and constructability risks.
- Support material governance, including long-lead risk management, substitutions, reservations and technical specification issues.
- Provide technical input on line ratings, impedance, P&C setting impacts, AESO PDUP requirements, Facility Applications, information requests and regulatory support.
- Handle senior technical issues involving standards interpretation, deviations, substitutions, field changes and integration risks.
- Contribute to engineering standards, design practice improvements and code application, including AEUC, CSA and relevant ISO reliability requirements.
- Build strong working relationships across project management, procurement, suppliers, external engineering resources, construction teams, customers and field stakeholders.
- Report engineering progress, risks, decisions and escalations to the Project Manager and Engineering Manager.
- Coach junior engineers, EITs, designers and other technical staff through reviews, guidance and knowledge transfer.
- Work in line with AltaLink’s cultural expectations of one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.
