Job description

Role overview

AltaLink is looking for a senior leader to steer business transformation within Operations and the teams affected by it, with a major emphasis on adopting the replacement of its end-of-life Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and related core systems. Based at the Calgary head office, this position reports to the VP, Business Transformation and will guide a multi-disciplinary group of about 10 to 20 employees.

The role owns the business side of a large transformation effort: defining requirements, shaping processes, setting the future operating model, building data stewardship, driving organizational readiness, and ensuring adoption and benefits are realized. It works closely with business leaders, Information Services, and outside implementation partners. While IS leads the technical architecture, integrations, system delivery, environments, and deployment, this role leads the business decision-making and readiness work through design, testing, training, cutover, go-live, stabilization, and adoption.

As part of the transformation leadership group, the Director turns enterprise strategy into practical plans, recommendations, and measurable results. The role also advises executive leadership and governance bodies, helps support business cases and investment decisions, and ensures transformation investments are defensible, practical, and aligned to AltaLink’s regulated environment and long-term direction.

Key responsibilities

  • Bring together cross-functional business stakeholders to define functional requirements, set priorities, and make timely decisions for the EAM/ERP replacement program and related business areas.
  • Run business decision forums, escalation routes, readiness reviews, and sign-off checkpoints, while providing clear status updates and recommendations to the VP, Business Transformation and executive governance.
  • Support business process design, readiness assessment, and implementation planning needed for the successful rollout of AltaLink’s next-generation EAM, ERP, and related systems, in partnership with IS-led technical delivery.
  • Work with business leaders, the VP, Business Transformation, and executive governance to design the future-state operating model, including ownership, responsibilities, decision rights, service expectations, and cross-functional interfaces.
  • Maintain the transformation roadmap, workstream sequencing, and readiness activities based on value, risk, dependencies, and organizational capacity.
  • Lead and coach the business transformation team to support objectives, strengthen capability, and sustain high performance.
  • Help managers develop their teams, work practices, processes, technology use, and employee engagement.
  • Guide the shift from current-state processes and ways of working to the future operating model and supporting systems.
  • Define and implement the organizational, cultural, process, and capability changes needed to improve business performance and embed new ways of working.
  • Establish business ownership for master data management, data quality standards, stewardship, migration readiness, and governance across impacted functions.
  • Represent business priorities and readiness needs with software vendors, system integrators, and advisory partners, while partnering with IS on technical scope and delivery.
  • Oversee business readiness for testing, UAT, training, cutover, go-live support, hypercare, and stabilization, in coordination with IS-led technical testing and deployment.
  • Coordinate integrated readiness and release planning with Information Services.
  • Define and monitor adoption measures, operational KPIs, and business benefits, and report results to executive leadership.
  • Support business cases, investment recommendations, staffing plans, and phased ramp-up/backfill planning.
  • Identify, assess, and reduce transformation risks, cross-functional impacts, and readiness gaps, and lead issue escalation and resolution.
  • Provide concise, credible, decision-oriented updates to executive leadership and governance forums, while building strong relationships across leadership and front-line teams to understand operational needs and adoption barriers.
  • Build a leadership culture centered on accountability, respect, collaboration, transparency, continuous improvement, and performance, while strengthening the organization’s change capability and future leaders.
  • Work with affiliated Berkshire Hathaway Energy business platforms to share learnings and align where appropriate.
  • Make sure transformation planning and investments reflect AlbertaLink’s regulated environment and cost-recovery requirements through disciplined planning, transparent documentation, and credible execution.
  • Support regulatory filings when needed, including witness participation in proceedings or hearings.
  • Model the organization’s four cultural pillars: one team, continuous improvement, customer focus, and personal accountability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, information technology, computer science, or a related field; an MBA or similar master’s degree is an advantage.
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in operations, maintenance, asset management, or business leadership in the energy sector and regulated utility environment, with increasing responsibility in complex asset-intensive organizations.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, including ownership of cross-functional initiatives, enterprise change, or large transformation programs.
  • Direct experience matching the responsibilities outlined for this role.
  • Proven track record leading business-led transformation, system modernization, or ERP/EAM initiatives alongside technology delivery teams; Maximo, Oracle, SAP, or similar platforms are preferred.
  • Ability to set up governance structures, decision forums, accountability frameworks, and executive-ready reporting for complex programs.
  • Experience defining target operating models, process ownership, organization changes, and future-state working models that can be sustained over time.
  • Strong grasp of end-to-end business processes, master data, data governance, data quality, and migration readiness in asset-intensive environments, with the ability to work effectively with IS on technical dependencies.
  • Experience leading readiness activities across testing, UAT, training, cutover, go-live, and stabilization for enterprise technology or process change.
  • Experience working with vendors, system integrators, and external advisors to align priorities, manage interfaces, and support knowledge transfer.
  • Ability to support business cases, investment choices, value tracking, and benefits realization through implementation and stabilization.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, internal controls, compliance, and documentation expectations in a regulated setting.
  • Executive presence, good judgment, and strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex matters, influence senior leaders, and lead through ambiguity and change.
  • Prosci, PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or similar change/program/transformation certification is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal ability to work with team members and customers and drive positive customer outcomes.
  • Ability to create an inclusive, high-performing team environment and lead across diverse employee groups.
  • Consistent attendance and strong performance history.

Benefits

  • Extended health coverage, including medical, disability, dental, and vision.
  • Spending accounts.
  • Competitive pay and bonus opportunity.
  • Defined contribution pension plan and group RRSP.
  • Group life insurance.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Vacation, earned time off, birthdays off, and 13 recognized holidays.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Social club.
  • Onsite parking and onsite gym.
  • Wellness programs.
