Role Overview

The Lighting Technician is responsible for assembling, operating, and maintaining lighting systems for all entertainment events onboard. Delivering exceptional guest experience through precise lighting management contributes to guest satisfaction and company profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, circuit, and focus lighting fixtures for scheduled shows.
  • Program lighting control consoles during technical rehearsals as assigned.
  • Conduct equipment and circuit checks prior to shows ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Operate both manual and computer-controlled lighting systems during performances.
  • Maintain design quality and performance consistency throughout show runs.
  • Operate follow-spotlights when required.
  • Log detailed reports for each show performance.
  • Communicate effectively and timely with Stage Manager and other departments.
  • Assist with sound requirements during special events and carry out minor to moderate repairs on lighting equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain overhead rigging in entertainment venues complying with safety standards.
  • Keep lighting areas organized and clean adhering to Public Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Attend rehearsals, show calls, and meetings punctually.
  • Deliver highest comfort and guest service aligned with Viking's STAR Service Standards and health policies.
  • Participate in daily operational meetings to align with team goals and standards.
  • Use proper personal protective equipment and safe lifting techniques to prevent injuries.
  • Follow Viking’s grooming and uniform standards for professional image.
  • Secure company assets especially during adverse weather to prevent damage or loss.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to work various shifts under pressure while maintaining a professional image.
  • Gain knowledge about itinerary ports, shore excursions, and onboard entertainment activities.
  • Motivate towards achieving quality and financial objectives within the Entertainment Department.
  • Follow all safety, security, environmental, and public health policies including participating in mandatory onboard training, drills, and exercises.
  • Perform any additional tasks as directed by Cruise Director, Assistant Cruise Director, Stage Manager, or Audio Designer.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience operating lighting equipment in live event settings including proficiency with DMX Control Systems and advanced wiring skills; prior shipboard experience is preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree focused on technical theater is advantageous.
  • Competency in handling machinery, hand tools, and control consoles such as MARTIN M1, GrandMA with LED and automated lighting fixtures, fog machines, lasers, spotlights, and strobe lights.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or crouch for prolonged times, and ascend ladders and scaffolding.
  • Comfortable accessing all theater spaces including catwalks.
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written, for clear and appropriate communication.
  • Resilient, flexible, dedicated team player with strong work ethic and capacity to work independently.
  • Administrative proficiency preferred including use of PC-based database, spreadsheets, and word processors.
  • Guest-oriented with positive demeanor, professional appearance, strict hygiene standards and comprehensive awareness of Public Health and Safety policies.

Guidelines and Policies

  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and STAR Service Standards within the department.
  • Maintain appropriate professional appearance per grooming standards which prohibit visible tattoos; exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis. Concealed tattoos with coverings other than uniform still considered visible.
