Role Overview
The position is for a Legal & Regulatory Researcher on a six-month contract, aimed at thorough legal research and compliance assessment related to our AI product features. This is not a document review role but a strategic research function delivering insights to senior management and external counsel.
Key Duties
- Conduct comprehensive research and compile a resource library of current legal and regulatory materials related to AI-assisted rental applications, including federal privacy laws and state/territory tenancy legislation.
- Analyze our product’s features, data points, and AI methodologies against applicable legal requirements.
- Identify compliance responsibilities, potential risks, and gaps for each product characteristic.
- Prepare tabular compliance summaries for review by senior leadership and legal advisors.
- Leverage AI tools efficiently to expedite research, cross-check references, and integrate findings.
- Collaborate iteratively with internal stakeholders to refine research scope and deliverables.
Candidate Profile
- Hold or be pursuing an LLB or JD degree, preferably in the final years of study.
- Strong proficiency with the Australian Privacy Principles and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
- Ability or eagerness to quickly master residential tenancy law across Australian jurisdictions.
- Experience using AI-assisted legal research tools.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to produce well-organized, precise written documents.
- Excellent communication skills enabling the presentation of complex legal information clearly to non-legal audiences.
- Self-motivated and capable of independently managing deliverables on a flexible timeline.
- Sound professional judgment, discretion, and a proactive approach to clarifying ambiguous legal issues.
Preferred Experience
- Background in PropTech, LegalTech, AI-related fields, or regulated technology industries.
- Knowledge of the Consumer Data Right (CDR) framework and open banking regulations.
- Familiarity with consumer protection, anti-discrimination laws, or data governance topics.
- Interest in AI governance, algorithmic transparency, and the legal challenges of automated decision-making.
- Previous research or legal support experience, such as paralegal or clerkship roles in firms, in-house teams, regulators, or academia.
- Skill in preparing issue matrices, compliance trackers, or legal summaries.
