Role Overview
The Legal Counsel for the EMEA region will operate from Berlin, Germany, offering practical and business-focused legal support across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This role involves close cooperation with various teams including commercial, product, engineering, privacy, security, human resources, and regional leadership to facilitate business growth while managing legal, regulatory, and operational risks.
Key Duties
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a comprehensive array of technology and SaaS commercial agreements such as MSAs, SLAs, DPAs, NDAs, RFP responses, EULAs, terms and conditions, as well as partner, reseller, and customer contracts.
- Providing actionable legal guidance to sales, customer success, partnerships, procurement, and regional business units to ensure smooth commercial operations.
- Assessing and mitigating legal and contractual risks to support business efficiency responsibly.
- Handling contract escalations by offering clear recommendations on risk acceptability, fallback clauses, and negotiation strategies.
- Advising on data protection, privacy (including GDPR), and related regulatory compliance matters throughout EMEA.
- Collaborating with internal units on data processing agreements, privacy clauses, vendor assessments, and customer security or compliance inquiries.
- Offering guidance on legal and regulatory aspects relevant to SaaS, cloud solutions, cybersecurity, e-commerce, AI functionalities, and digital products within EMEA.
- Working alongside internal teams and external counsel to stay informed about applicable legal developments.
- Supporting product, engineering, security, and compliance teams with legal considerations for new features, APIs, integrations, AI-driven solutions, and product launches.
- Delivering practical legal advice that balances regulatory requirements with customer expectations, product goals, and business strategies.
- Translating complex legal concepts into understandable and actionable guidance for business and technical stakeholders.
- Enhancing legal operations by creating templates, playbooks, clause libraries, workflows, and scalable contracting frameworks.
- Assisting with the implementation of legal policies, regional compliance protocols, and governance processes.
- Providing training sessions to internal staff on contract management, privacy issues, compliance, risk mitigation, and legal best practices.
- Coordinating with external legal counsel for jurisdiction-specific matters across the EMEA region.
Qualifications and Experience
- Professionally qualified lawyer within a European jurisdiction.
- Between 5 to 10 years of legal experience, preferably in technology, SaaS, commercial law, or a blend of in-house and private practice.
- Demonstrated expertise in drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements including SaaS, technology, data protection, and partner/reseller contracts.
- Thorough understanding of GDPR and privacy standards across EMEA.
- Experience advising business teams on commercial, regulatory, and risk-related concerns in an international setting.
- Capability to communicate clear and practical legal advice to non-legal audiences.
- Strong skills in stakeholder management, able to establish trust with teams across sales, product, engineering, security, HR, finance, and leadership.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, rapidly growing global company.
- Excellent judgment, meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize effectively.
- Fluency in English is required; additional European language proficiency is advantageous.
- Legal authorization to work in Germany is mandatory.
