Continuing District Counsellor (Itinerant)

About the Role

School District No. 78 (Fraser-Cascade) is seeking a full-time Continuing District Counsellor to join the Inclusive Education Department. This itinerant position provides mental health and counselling support for priority learners from kindergarten through grade 12, with a primary emphasis on elementary school students. The role spans district-wide, including services to both in-person and remote students as well as those in Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide mental health and counselling services for students and families in school, home, and community environments.
• Work flexible hours with occasional evenings to suit the needs of students and families.
• Lead district supports and initiatives related to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) and Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA).
• Coordinate closely with Inclusive Education colleagues, Indigenous communities, external agencies, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Serve as an advocate supporting students and families, including on-reserve populations.
• Engage with the Integrated Child and Youth Team and support school-based teams addressing a variety of student needs.
• Assist staff (teachers, counsellors, Child and Youth Care Workers, and administrators) in supporting individual student plans.
• Participate in safety planning, risk assessments, and responses to incidents as needed.
• Help connect individuals and families to appropriate community resources and programs, such as MindUp.
• Offer professional development, training, and consultation for assessment, instruction, and behaviour management strategies.
• Support case managers in applying for and maintaining status for Category H students.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree with a focus on counselling (school counselling or equivalent).
• Valid B.C. Teaching Certificate.
• Solid understanding of Ministry of Education and Inclusive Education policies.
• Demonstrated strong communication, consultation, and team collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with external child and youth mental health organizations.
• Direct experience in a school counsellor role at either elementary or secondary level.
• Awareness of Inclusive Education methods, individualized education plans (IEPs), and teamwork in school-based settings.
• Background dealing with students who have behavioural or emotional difficulties and managing crisis situations.
• Formal training in threat and suicide risk assessment procedures.
• Experience working with Indigenous learners and their families, particularly those living on reserve.
• Certification for Level B educational testing.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and support interdisciplinary teams.

Additional Information

• This position carries a Coordinator stipend for district-level leadership in Inclusive Education programming.

Compensation

Salary range: $61,502 - $113,628 per year, depending on placement in Category and Grid level.
