Role Overview
The Legal Counsel will oversee Scrambly's legal functions related to corporate affairs and product compliance. Collaborating closely with leadership, product, and operations teams, this position ensures lawful growth and adherence to global regulatory standards. It is ideal for candidates who relish strategic legal analysis alongside hands-on implementation, including drafting internal legal workflows, managing contracts, and advising on compliance concerning new product features, especially data privacy and consumer protection.
Primary Responsibilities
- Draft, assess, and negotiate diverse commercial and partnership contracts safeguarding company interests.
- Ensure compliance with regulations across key global markets including the EU, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
- Provide ongoing legal counsel to management and operational teams for daily needs.
- Act as the lead legal advisor to product, design, and marketing departments.
- Maintain and revise user-facing legal documents such as Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Cookie Policy.
- Guide teams on compliance with data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA) and international consumer protection requirements.
- Partner with engineering and product units to verify that new functionalities conform to applicable digital consumer and data protection laws.
- Support product innovations like subscription offerings, advising on refund, cancellation, and payment processes.
- Strike a pragmatic balance between compliance risks and business objectives by offering nuanced recommendations.
- Serve as Scrambly’s Data Protection Officer, ensuring GDPR, CCPA, and comparable regulations are met in jurisdictions like Japan, Korea, and the UK.
- Monitor data handling practices, keep detailed processing records, and ensure privacy-by-design with product and engineering teams.
- Lead responses to data subject access requests, data breaches, and regulatory investigations collaborating with relevant parties.
- Develop and uphold internal privacy policies, governance structures, and deliver staff privacy training.
- Advise on matters related to international data transfers, vendor contracts, and third-party compliance assessments.
Candidate Requirements
- Master’s degree in Law; admission to the bar in any EU jurisdiction is preferred.
- At least five years of experience as a Legal Counsel or in a comparable role, preferably within technology, SaaS, or digital product sectors.
- Strong expertise in contract law, employment arrangements, and commercial agreement drafting.
- Comprehensive understanding of data privacy and consumer protection laws, including GDPR, CCPA, and equivalents in Japan, South Korea, and the UK.
- Experience preparing localized, user-oriented legal documents such as Privacy Policies and Terms of Service.
- A commercially aware approach capable of evaluating legal risks and formulating practical solutions.
- Proficient in English with excellent communication abilities to collaborate effectively across international, multidisciplinary teams.
