About the Role

The University of Canterbury's School of Mathematics and Statistics, within the Faculty of Engineering based in Christchurch, New Zealand, is seeking a full-time Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics for a continuing, permanent position. Key Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging, research-based teaching across various courses, empowering students to develop critical, creative, and analytical thinking skills.
• Innovate curriculum design and delivery to enhance student experience, retention, and graduate success.
• Pursue external funding to advance the School’s research and scholarship profile.
• Supervise and mentor postgraduate students to support their academic and career development.
• Establish and maintain a strong research program within applied mathematics or related areas, contributing to the School’s research culture.
• Foster collaborations with university colleagues, industry partners, and national and international networks.
• Contribute to service, outreach, and leadership initiatives promoting an inclusive and collegial environment.
• At the Senior Lecturer level, provide leadership in research, mentor colleagues, and help shape the School’s research direction and reputation.

This role also involves some offshore teaching responsibilities associated with a joint programme between the University of Canterbury and Qufu Normal University in China.

Candidate Profile

• PhD or equivalent in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related discipline.
• Strong enthusiasm for teaching with experience in inclusive and innovative pedagogical practices.
• Evidence of an active or emerging research portfolio in applied mathematics with the capacity to lead impactful research outputs.
• Experience mentoring or providing academic leadership, demonstrating supportive collaboration.
• Understanding or developing understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and New Zealand’s bicultural context.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively across diverse cultures and communities.
• Commitment to equity and inclusion, supporting underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

Salary and Terms

Employment is governed by relevant collective agreements with a salary scale ranging from $94,181 to $113,616 for lecturer roles and $119,586 to $135,630 for senior lecturer roles.
