About the Opportunity

Auckland Council’s Pool and Leisure Centres are dedicated to encouraging more people to lead active lifestyles, supporting the vision of making Auckland the most active city globally. We are seeking a Team Member to join our Learn to Swim team, where you will play a crucial role in fostering positive experiences that motivate Aucklanders to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

This role offers a great chance to earn a recognized swimming instructor qualification while assisting individuals in developing essential water safety and swimming skills. You will be responsible for crafting a fun, encouraging, and secure atmosphere for clients of all ages. Prior experience working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is highly valued.

Work Details

Positions are available either as casual or permanent part-time commitments (6 hours per week), with shifts scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Comprehensive training will be provided to help you excel, scheduled between 28 September and 9 October 2026 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm) at venues in West Wave and Auckland Central (confirmation pending).

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates are confident swimmers and instructors who are passionate about water activities and possess excellent customer service skills coupled with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse communities. A strong commitment to positively impacting our varied clientele is essential.

This role requires spending significant time in the water, working in warm, humid conditions, and routine exposure to chlorinated water; applicants should consider this when applying.

A recognized swim teaching qualification or prior swimming instructor experience is advantageous, though full training will be provided. Candidates must also be prepared to undergo First Aid training.

Benefits and Support

As a Learn to Swim Instructor, you will enjoy complimentary access to Auckland Council’s facilities, work hours that promote a healthy work-life balance, and the support of a dedicated team. The role offers the personal satisfaction of helping individuals gain swimming confidence and safety skills.

Additional perks include access to various Auckland Council benefits such as a Zoo pass and numerous partnership discounts. Employees also benefit from free use of Leisure Centre facilities. Opportunities exist for further training and development across related roles including Lifeguard, Customer Service Representative, and Recreation Assistant.

Diversity and Inclusion

Auckland Council is committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace that values contributions from all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, or background. We hold accreditation from GenderTick and are signatories of the Pride Pledge, reflecting our dedication to diversity and equity. We welcome applications from all members of the community to help build a vibrant Tāmaki Makaurau.

Additional Information

The starting wage for this role is $28.95 per hour, adhering to the Living Wage standard. Employer KiwiSaver contributions are provided above this base salary. Applications close on Tuesday 21 July 2026 at 11:59 pm.

As the role qualifies as a Children's Worker position under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014, successful applicants must undergo police vetting. Pre-employment drug testing is also mandated due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory police and safety clearances.

Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer committed to accessible hiring processes. Applicants who require assistance or accommodations are encouraged to communicate their needs during the application process. We value diverse experiences, including transferable skills from outside traditional employment contexts, and encourage all interested individuals to apply irrespective of meeting every requirement listed.
