About the Internship

This is a paid 12-week summer internship at the Living Wage rate of $29.90 per hour, providing practical experience, support, and development opportunities. Interns will engage in meaningful projects that contribute to services and initiatives shaping the future of Tāmaki Makaurau and enhancing outcomes for Aucklanders by managing and improving stormwater infrastructure and natural water systems.

Opportunity Overview

The Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department at Auckland Council manages, plans, and develops stormwater systems, collaborating with iwi and communities to ensure healthy environments and resilient infrastructure. The Network Solutions team is seeking enthusiastic and motivated interns to assist with key infrastructure and housing projects across Auckland.

Programmes You Will Support

  • Network Upgrade Programme: Facilitate land access and funding processes to install necessary pipes and drains through an innovative statutory framework.
  • Haumanu Programme: Implement stream and river enhancement initiatives and monitor environmental benefits to help developers meet regulatory offset obligations.
  • HWFR Support Programme: Provide assistance with commercial and property negotiations, agreements, and resolving customer disputes related to stormwater and flood resilience projects.

Internship Activities

  • Research and review property files and access agreements.
  • Manage and enhance statutory procedures, including interactions with Water Service Commissioners.
  • Support customer communication and administrative duties.
  • Attend meetings alongside project managers and engineers.
  • Learn how council plans and executes large-scale public stormwater projects.
  • Gain exposure to real-world environmental, legal, and property challenges.

Candidate Profile

The ideal intern will have a strong interest in property law, infrastructure delivery, and the role legal frameworks play in supporting environmental goals. They should demonstrate excellent communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a proactive approach. A foundational understanding of property law, planning frameworks, and public sector processes is important, alongside the ability to analyze information, maintain organization, and work collaboratively. Experience with legal research tools, property databases, or Microsoft Office is beneficial. Holding a valid New Zealand Driver’s license is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Eligible to work full-time in New Zealand from 23 November 2026 to 19 February 2027.
