Overview
The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking a motivated and skilled criminal litigator to join the team as a Lawyer PAL1 at the Manukau office in Auckland. This role offers the opportunity to handle a diverse range of criminal cases while working in a supportive, collaborative environment focused on high-quality client defence.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide robust criminal defence representation to clients receiving legal aid.
- Manage and work through a varied caseload of criminal matters effectively.
- Offer guidance and support to intermediate and senior lawyers within the team.
Candidate Profile and Skills
- Hold PAL1 approval and be legally qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
- Be passionate about criminal justice and dedicated to upholding these principles.
- Exhibit confidence in building credibility with judges, legal peers, and broader community stakeholders.
- Enjoy collaboratively sharing legal knowledge and strategies.
- Demonstrate empathy and strong interpersonal skills, able to connect with diverse individuals.

Salary Range and Application Details
The salary band for this role ranges from $74,490 to $100,642 per annum, with starting pay based on candidate skills and experience. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until 12 August 2026.
